Me (David) and Stevie Ray

Stevie Ray Vaughan never visited the archives, but on one memorable evening in 1986 I was close to the action when he brought Billy Cox on as his special guest for a jam at his appearance at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, January 28, 1986.

I had previously contributed to a couple of all Hendrix issues of "Guitar World" magazine and then editor, Noe Goldwasser, mentioned to me what a great pairing Stevie Ray & Billy Cox might be. He gave me the number for Stevie's Texas management's office and, after clearing the idea with Billy, called and said I could introduce Stevie Ray to Billy if he would like, the next time he was in Nashville. They called me back soon after and as fate would have it, Stevie was coming to Nashville soon (and could I have Billy at the venue at 4pm for a sound check.)

At rehearsals, Tommy Shannon gave Billy his Fender bass and I sat on the front row of the empty Opry House and watched them go through "Come On Pt. 1" and "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)" while Tommy sat cross legged on the floor near Billy. That night both songs drew standing ovations.

I think the looks on our faces tells the story of how everyone was feeling after the show that night.
